Reminders
Sign your child’s agenda and reading log each night.
What First Grade Is Like
In first grade, your child is beginning to learn more independently. We will learn how to read and further develop reading and phonics skills, including short and long vowel sounds, vowel teams, consonant blends, and more! We will learn to add and subtract, work with base ten and place value, relate 2-D and 3-D shapes, work with the fractions 1/2 and 1/4, and much more!
As A Parent
As a parent, you play a significant role in helping your child to read. It is important for you to read aloud to your child every night from a book that is too difficult for him/her to read alone. This helps your child to hear and learn
new words and to build reading comprehension skills. It is also important to have your child read aloud to you every night for at least 10 – 15 minutes from a book that can be read with few mistakes.
Ideas For Home
*Practice addition and subtraction facts while riding in the car.
*Practice reading and sounding out signs while riding in the car.
*Ask your child to tally how many books he reads, how many bike rides he has taken, etc.
*Spend time talking with your child, explaining things and asking questions that require your child to think about “why?” and “what if?”.
*Answer your child’s questions. If you cannot answer them, help him look for the answer in a book.
*Challenge your child by asking questions that require more than a yes or no answer.
*Keep and use a calendar for family events.
